Somatic Terms Simplified: Pendulation

At Squat + Reset, we talk a lot about learning how to move through intensity without losing yourself.
One of the core somatic concepts that we use in class is called pendulation. Pendulation is a concept commonly used in Somatic Experiencing, developed by Peter Levine.
Pendulation is the practice of gently moving between activation and regulation.
In simple terms: Your nervous system learns that it can experience challenge, movement, emotion, effort, or stress, and still return to safety.
Instead of staying stuck in overwhelm, shutdown, or survival mode, the body begins to build flexibility.
Think about a pendulum swinging:
activation ↔ safety
effort ↔ recovery
tension ↔ release
movement ↔ stillness
At Squat + Reset, we practice this through strength based exercises (activation or a state of fight or flight) into nervous system regulation through somatic movement, breath, grounding, music, strength work, somatic dance, free-form expression. We pendulate back and forth several times throughout class.
You might notice this in class when:
we move from high-energy movement into grounding
we shift between activation and recovery
we incorporate somatic movement and free-form dance for emotional release and nervous system expression
we pause to breathe after activation
we encourage you to modify instead of override your body
we remind you that you can feel intensity without abandoning yourself
Somatic movement helps the body release stored stress, tension, emotional suppression, and survival patterns that many of us have been conditioned to push past or ignore.
This work is not just about movement. It is about reconnecting to who you are underneath the conditioning that taught you to constantly perform, suppress, disconnect, or hold it all together.
This work teaches your nervous system:
it is safe to feel
it is safe to slow down
it is safe to take up space
it is safe to express
it is safe to experience joy
it is safe to be fully human
Pendulation does not mean avoiding hard things.
It means learning how to move through hard things with more awareness, regulation, self-trust, and compassion for yourself along the way.
Over time, this can help people feel:
more emotionally resilient
as if their nervous system is more supported and regulated
more connected to their body
less stuck in fight-or-flight
able to feel their feelings without losing themselves or spiraling
able to release emotions safely
more grounded during stress
safer expressing themselves
more connected to joy, softness, strength, and authenticity
Important note: Pendulation is a concept used in somatic and trauma-informed practices. Squat + Reset classes are not therapy, but they are designed to support nervous system awareness, embodied movement, emotional safety, and self-expression.
